Police and Fire Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was not held due to lack of a quorum:
All items on the agenda were discussed and Fire Chief Jason Morris reported to the Committee the Fire Department Activity Report, and presented an idea for an American Fire Training Systems everyone felt it was an excellent idea and would love to see it through even if it is a long term plan. How to use the Foreign Fire Fund (2% board) was discussed by Jason saying he would like to see a pole barn built with 5 bays near the Fire Station. The pole barn will be used for City Fire equipment only and will compliment the Fire Station Building.

Consensus of the Committee present all agreed to put on the agenda to take action on hiring 4 Paid on Call Firefighters.

Keith Davis also addressed the Committee about the garage doors at the Fire Station. Keith told them the strips on the bottom of the doors need replacing. He added that we could put all new doors for the price of $5,440.00. The Committee recommended to be brought full Council for a decision.

Alderman William Carrell, Kim Brown, Charles Barfield, David McManus, Robert Midnight, Jerry Mizell, Nathan Anderson arrived at 1:14. Also present were Mayor Billy McDaniel, Corporate Council Rick Abell, CFO Trisha Suttles, City Clerk Jan Adams, and Police Chief Mike Worthen.

Police Chief Mike Worthen addressed the Committee with issues concerning the vacancy as a result of Officer Chuck Short retiring. He stated that he has a current list from the Police and Fire Commission of several police officers that have been tested and are available for work immediately. A motion was then made by Alderman William Carrell and second by Alderman David McManus to recommend to the full Council the hiring of a new officer. MOTOIN CARRIED

The committee further discussed the vacancy of Sergeant that has been created by Chuck Short’s retirement. A motion was made by Alderman William Carrell and second by Alderman David McManus that the Police and Fire Commission be authorized to fill sergeants position MOTION CARRIED:

Mike also brought the issue of C&W’s suspension, asking the Committee do we reinstate the contract with them. The Committee talked about having a stipulation if they return saying that any more complaints from our citizens then they would be taken off the list permanently. A recommendation would need to be made by the full Council if we wanted to reinstate their contract.
